Nearly 90 percent of women are affected by cellulite at some point in their life. Men can be affected by cellulite as well, but it occurs more commonly in women as cellulite typically forms in the hips, thighs, and buttocks. While cellulite is not a serious medical concern, it can be a big cosmetic concern for many people. At Chernoff Cosmetic Surgery in Santa Rosa, we offer VelaShape® treatments to help patients reduce the appearance of cellulite.
What is VelaShape®?
VelaShape® is a non-invasive treatment to help reduce cellulite. The treatment uses a combination of bipolar radiofrequency energy, infrared light energy, and vacuum and mechanical massage to visibly reduce cellulite. Treatments typically take about 15 to 45 minutes depending on the area(s) being treated. Results can be seen after first treatment, however, most patients will see optimal results after four to six treatments. Dr. Chernoff will recommend the number of treatments needed to achieve your optimal results during your initial consultation. There is no downtime needed after VelaShape® treatments, most patients are able to immediately return to work and other normal activities.

How does VelaShape® work?
The bipolar radiofrequency and infrared light energies cause a deep heating of the fat cells, stimulating the production of collagen and elastin and causing the fat cells to break down. This targeted heating effectively shrinks the size of fat cells and fat chambers. Depending on the area(s) being treated, patients may also require a suction massage to improve circulation and increase lymphatic drainage. The result of VelaShape® treatments is a gradual smoothing of the skin’s surface and a visible reduction of cellulite.
Are there any side effects?
Potential side effects can include some mild discomfort and/or swelling following a VelaShape® treatment. These side effects resolve on their own and should subside within a few days of treatment.
What is cellulite?
Cellulite is fatty deposits found in the subcutaneous layer of the skin that is pushing up around the connective tissues that connect the skin and muscles. The results of the fat bulging around these connective tissues is a lumpy or dimpled appearance of the skin. Cellulite is commonly found on the hips, thigh, and buttocks, but can also form on the breasts, upper arms, and lower abdomen.
