About Chin Implants (Mentoplasty)
In both men and women, a small, recessed chin can be seen as a sign of weakness or frailty. Whether it is a congenital defect or the result of facial trauma, a diminutive chin can cause an imbalance with other facial features, detracting from an otherwise aesthetically pleasing appearance.
A Chin Implant, or Mentoplasty, is a procedure designed to permanently improve the projection of a small, recessed chin through the utilization of a silicone insert. By increasing the shape and size of the chin, the facial proportions are restored, creating a renewed symmetry with the other features. A more prominent chin not only increases aesthetic appeal, but it will also elongate the neck, bringing out a definition of the face and taking pounds off the appearance.
Chernoff Cosmetic Surgery combines current surgical advances with cutting edge technology to safely provide natural looking enhancement of the chin and lower face. Performed alone or in combination with other restorative procedures, Dr. Chernoff can include the Chin Implant as part of an individualized, rejuvenating facial transformation. Dr. Chernoff sees many of his patients over the age of 35 decide to delay a Facelift or other invasive procedure after receiving their Chin Augmentation, as the implant can significantly lift the aging, sagging tissues of the lower face.
Why Choose a Chin Implant?
A Chin Implant is comprised of a biocompatible silicone; a state-of-the-art physical insert to enhance or augment the structure of the lower face. Coming in various shapes and sizes, the Chin Implant can be custom selected to fit the exact need of each patient. At the consultation appointment, Dr. Chernoff will decide which type and size implant will work best to reach your specific aesthetic goals.
A proportionate facial structure is key for an attractive appearance. The chin is a vital element for both balance and symmetry of the face. A mentoplasty can increase the size and projection of a chin, restoring balance with the forehead, nose, and cheeks. The addition of a Chin Implant can provide a subtle improvement to the facial silhouette while equalizing the more prominent features. The striking, aesthetically pleasing results of a Chin Augmentation can lift spirits, raise self-esteem, and greatly improve a patient’s level of self-confidence.
The Chin Implant Procedure:
Dr. Chernoff performs the Chin Implant as an outpatient procedure at our nearby Day Surgery Center using either twilight or general anesthesia. A local anesthetic is also used to fully numb the lower face. First, Dr. Chernoff will make a tiny incision on the inside, front portion of the mouth. The Chin Implant is placed, positioned, and finally secured. Dissolving stitches and flesh colored tape will hold the implant in position for the first three to four days.
The recovery time from a chin augmentation is usually about a week; patients should take five to seven days off work or school to allow for proper healing. Expect moderate discomfort, aching and numbness for the first couple days after surgery. Some swelling and bruising will occur, but diminishes quickly. Patients should keep their head elevated for the initial 24-48 hours after surgery; this will discourage any additional swelling. Dr. Chernoff makes sure his patients rest comfortably at home by prescribing appropriate medications. By six weeks post-surgery, all swelling should be diminished and the final Chin Implant results can be appreciated.
Very rarely, complications will occur after mentoplasty. Problems that can be associated with Chin Augmentation include infection, scarring, and a dislodging of the implant. Remember to always choose the best cosmetic surgeon available; this will greatly reduce the risk for any serious complications.
The Mentoplasty Consultation with Dr. Chernoff:
All mentoplasty procedures begin with a thorough consultation appointment. At this time, Dr. Chernoff will assess the facial structure, discuss long-term goals, review the appropriate surgical options and their potential results, as well as discuss the potential risks involved. He will show Before/After photos of his recent Chin Implant patients, and utilize computer imaging to determine the best size and shape implant for the individual situation. A customized surgical plan will be created, and tailored to the needs and goals of the specific patient. The cost of a Chin Implant will be discussed, as well as the financing options available.
The modern Chin Implant opens up a new door for aesthetic and reconstructive cosmetic surgery patients. Vastly improving the facial contour, augmenting congenital defects, and repairing damage from face-trauma, the mentoplasty makes it consistently simple to obtain the goal of facial balance. All patients, men and women, can benefit from the Chin Augmentation procedure.

If you were born with prominent or “high” cheekbones and notice they have disappeared over the years, you are not alone. As we age, we lose fat and volume in our face. Others may have inherited a flatter mid face which can continue to become flatter as we age.
Cheek implants are a permanent way to help create or restore prominent and alluring cheekbones. A variety of different cheek implants are available in different sizes, shapes and materials to achieve your desired look.
The cheek implant procedure is relatively simple. After an incision is made inside your mouth where the implant will sit inside your cheek, a pocket is formed and the implant is properly secured. Generally, patients are placed under local anesthesia with sedation during this outpatient procedure. Cheek implants are commonly performed with facelifts or other procedures.
