Gynecomastia is a condition of over-developed or enlarged breasts in men that can occur at any age. The condition can be the result of hormonal changes, heredity, obesity, or the use of certain drugs.
Gynecomastia can cause emotional discomfort and impair your self-confidence. Some men may even avoid certain physical activities and intimacy simply to hide their condition.
Gynecomastia is characterized by:
- Excess localized fat
- Excess glandular tissue development
- Excess breast skin
- Presence unilaterally (one breast) or bilaterally (both breasts)
Gynecomastia surgery reduces breast size, flattening and enhancing the chest contours while improving the conditions listed above. Dr. Chernoff typically uses ultrasound-assisted liposuction to remove the excess fat and shrink the skin. At times, surgical excision of excess skin is required.
Prior to any surgery, a complete medical history is taken in order to evaluate our patient’s general health. Dr. Chernoff will do a thorough examination to determine the most effective surgical approach. He will describe the type of anesthesia to be used, the procedure, what results might realistically be expected, and the possible risks and complications.
Pain connected with the procedure is mild to moderate, but is controlled with oral medication. Daily showers and antibiotics will be continued to prevent infection. Instructions for the day of surgery include rest and limited activities. Dr. Chernoff will determine when normal activities can be resumed; however, weight training and aerobic exercise must be avoided for a period of time. Swelling, bruising, numbness and over sensitivity around the surgical area may occur, but these conditions are usually temporary.
