Male Breast Reduction

Eliminate Your Man Boobs (Gynecomastia) in Indianapolis, IN

Gynecomastia is a condition of over-developed or enlarged breasts in men that can occur at any age. The condition can be the result of hormonal changes, heredity, obesity, or the use of certain drugs.

Young men can experience enlarged breast tissue at puberty, which goes away after a few years or can last until adulthood. Gynecomastia can also develop after middle age peaks and testosterone levels begin to slow down.

For some men, losing weight can help reduce the profile and size of male breasts. However, there are cases when excessive glandular tissue causes even slimmer individuals to have enlarged breasts.

Many men come to Chernoff Cosmetic Surgery in Indianapolis, IN, to discuss what can be done about their enlarged breast tissue. Dr. Greg Chernoff understands that they are self-conscious when wearing tight shirts, the room, at the gym, swimming, and/or in intimate situations. He advises them that a gynecomastia procedure reduces breast size and enables the chest contours to be improved.

What is Gynecomastia?

Hormonal changes at puberty, anabolic and bodybuilding steroids, medications, and significant weight gain can cause gynecomastia. This condition is characterized by:

  • Excess localized fat
  • Excess glandular tissue development
  • Excess breast skin
  • Presence unilaterally (one breast) or bilaterally (both breasts)

Male breast reduction surgery reduces breast size, flattening and enhancing the chest contours while improving the conditions listed above. Dr. Chernoff uses ultrasound-assisted liposuction to remove the excess fat and shrink the skin. At times, the surgical excision of excess skin is required.

Regardless of the cause(s), a male breast reduction surgery procedure can make a significant difference in a man’s self-esteem.

What is Male Breast Reduction Surgery

Gynecomastia surgery flattens and enhances the chest contours, reducing breast size and improving the conditions listed above. Typically, Dr. Chernoff will use ultrasound-assisted liposuction to remove the excess fat and shrink down the skin accordingly. There may be times when the surgical extraction of excess skin will be required.

Prior to a male breast reduction surgery, a complete medical history is taken in order to evaluate our patient’s general health. Dr. Chernoff will do a thorough examination to determine the most effective surgical approach. He will describe the type of anesthesia to be used, the procedure, what results might realistically be expected, and the possible risks and complications.

Preparing for Surgery

Prior to any surgical procedure, Dr. Chernoff recommends that all our patients read our "Patient Guide for Plastic Surgery". The guide explains important points that all patients should think about as they are considering a surgical procedure.

Is There a Non-Surgical Option for Male Breast Reduction?

Dr. Chernoff has completed hundreds of male breast reduction procedures. Some men who cannot have surgery have benefitted from CoolSculpting for some reduction in their breast tissue. CoolSculpting works by freezing and reducing fat cells. Dr. Chernoff will ensure gynecomastia patients understand the limitations of CoolSculpting.

About your Male Breast Reduction
Surgery Recovery

Mild-to-moderate pain may occur following the procedure, but it can be controlled with oral medication. Daily showers and antibiotics should be continued to prevent any infection. Some instructions for the day of surgery include getting an appropriate amount of rest and limiting activities. Swelling, bruising, numbness and over-sensitivity around the surgical area may occur, but these conditions are usually temporary.

Dr. Chernoff will determine when normal activities can be resumed; however, weight training and aerobic exercise must be avoided for a longer period of time.
