What Are The Different Types of Scars?
Scars are a natural part of the healing process resulting from an abnormal overgrowth of tissue. Scars can leave a red-raised mark, a fine line or a pitted hole on the skin. The different types of scars include:
- Normal fine-line scars
A minor cut will usually heal which will gradually get paler and flatter over time. Fine-line scars are common following an injury or after surgery leaving a raised pale scar. On darker skin, the scar tissue may fade to leave a brown or white mark. - Keloid scars
A keloid scar is a special type of scar that results from overgrowth of tissue that occurs when too much collagen is produced at the site of the wound. For some people, the keloid scar keeps growing. Removal of keloid scars requires specialized expertise to optimize results and minimize more damage to the skin. Learn more about treatment for keloid scars. - Hypertrophic scars
Hypertrophic scars are also the result of excess collagen being produced at the site of a wound or injury but not as much overgrowth of tissue is produce as compared with keloid scars. Also, hypertrophic scars don’t extend beyond the boundary of the original wound, but they may continue to thicken for up to six months. - Pitted or sunken scars (Atrophic scars)
Some scars caused by skin conditions, such as acne and illnesses such as chickenpox can cause scars that have a pitted or sunken appearance. - Stretch Marks
Stretch marks are long, narrow streaks or stripes that occur when the skin is stretched too quickly. Learn more about stretch mark treatments.

Does Dr. Chernoff do traditional surgical scar revision?
It’s rare for Dr. Chernoff to complete surgical scar revision because most often, in his experience, surgical scar revision can make a scar look worse. The location of the scar, how much tissue the patient has in the area, and how the patient’s skin responds to the scar allows Dr. Chernoff to determine the treatment plan. Some doctors perform scar revision because they do not have the multi-modality treatment options that are available at Chernoff Cosmetic Surgery.
After I complete the treatment plan, will my scar(s) be gone?
Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee your scar(s) will be gone. Everyone’s skin and tissue respond differently to the treatment. Your scar will look better but may not be gone after Dr. Chernoff’s recommended treatment plan.
How soon can my stretch marks be treated after they appear?
Stretch marks respond best to treatment when they are treated soon after forming while they are still red or pink in color. Old stretch marks can still be treated, it will take more treatments to see improvement. Chernoff Cosmetic Surgery has been treating improving stretch marks for 15+ years and has multi-modality treatments to improve STRETCH MARKS.
How soon can an injury scar be treated?
As soon as the wound is healed, scar treatment can begin. And, the sooner scar treatment is started, the better the result. When a scar is first healing, it is typically red and vascular. When the blood is flowing to the scar, that is the best time to start treatment to have the best result in the least amount of time. Old scars can still be treated, it just takes longer to achieve results.
Can acne scars be treated while active acne is present?
Yes. If you have active acne and acne scars, scar improving treatment can be performed. In fact, the treatment used to improve the scars will also help the active acne. Many treatments we use to treat active acne are the same laser and light-based treatments we use for scar treatment. The settings and the penetration depth may be adjusted in certain areas of the face, but the treatments are beneficial for both active acne and acne scars.
