Improve Skin Quality & Tone
in Indianapolis, IN

You may have heard the term “IPL facial” and have found yourself wondering if you could benefit from one. In order to answer that question, a little understanding of what IPL facials consist of, as well as the conditions for which they are used, can be helpful.

Laser photo facial therapy using Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is an excellent non-invasive procedure that can dramatically improve the tone, texture, and overall quality of the skin.

IPL therapy uses broad-spectrum light to stimulate collagen growth, break down pigment, decrease blood vessels, and shrink sebaceous glands.

Dr. Greg Chernoff at Chernoff Cosmetic Surgery in Indiana advises men and women that IPL can improve skin texture, fine lines, wrinkles, acne, acne scarring, age spots, sun damage, and birthmarks on any area of the face or body. IPL is a quick, in-office procedure that involves no downtime and an immediate return to activities.

Dr. Chernoff is an expert in the field of laser therapy. He assisted in the development and clinical studies for Intense Pulsed Light lasers. He and his trained nursing staff, also perform other laser procedures for facial and body rejuvenation, Fractionated CO2 DOT, Aerolase, and other treatments to improve redness, spider veins, scars, acne, stretch marks, hair removal, tattoo removal, and more.

Why Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) For Skin Improvements?

Common visible signs of aging such as sagging of the skin and the development of wrinkles and fine lines are caused by a lack of a sufficient amount of collagen to keep the skin tight. As you grow older, your body naturally slows down its rate of collagen production. This causes the skin to become loose. It will then start to sag, and the wrinkles will show up. Stimulating the growth of collagen is part of the benefits of an IPL facial. Collagen is a substance that helps to provide fullness. As a result, it keeps the skin tight and free from lines and wrinkles.

Some of the most common places for lines and wrinkles are along the edges of the eyes, in which case, they are often referred to as crow’s feet. The jowls can begin to sag, leading to wrinkles around the mouth. Wrinkles across the forehead are common signs of aging as well. By focusing the IPL energy on these areas, collagen will begin to grow until it reaches a level that is adequate for keeping the skin tight. Consequently, the wrinkles will disappear.

Many people get IPL facials to help eliminate brown spots on the skin. These spots are sometimes referred to as age spots because they typically show up after a person is well into their adult years. However, referring to them as sunspots more accurately describes how they originate.

Dark spots on the skin are there because melanin has become concentrated in small patches. Melanin is the material that provides pigment. Its levels naturally increase in response to sunlight. This is the skin’s way of protecting itself against harmful UV rays. It is how you get that golden tan as the Summer months grow nearer. For some reason, when this process is repeated a number of times from year to year, melanin will permanently concentrate in spots rather than spread out evenly through the skin. IPL facials can help to break up the concentrated melanin. When this happens, you will be left with more evenly toned skin.

Prior to any treatment or procedure, Dr. Chernoff or one of our trained and certified Health Care Providers determine if you are a candidate, review the risks and benefits, and provide all possible treatment alternatives.

What Is Laser Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) And How Does It Work?

Laser photo facial therapy using Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is an excellent non-invasive procedure that can dramatically improve the tone, texture, and overall quality of the skin. Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy uses broad-spectrum light to stimulate collagen growth, break down pigment, decrease blood vessels, and shrink sebaceous glands.

IPL can improve skin texture, fine lines, wrinkles, acne, acne scarring, age spots, sun damage, and birthmarks on any area of the face or body.

This is a quick, in-office procedure and there is no downtime or recovery associated with IPL therapy. Some slight redness may occur in patients with fair skin, but this is temporary and usually resolves very soon after treatment. Patients can return to work and other normal activities right away. IPL therapy is very safe with few risks or complications.

For optimal results, most patients require an average of three to six IPL treatments spaced two to four weeks apart. Dr. Chernoff will determine the length of time between treatments based on your particular skin issue. Patients suffering from severe acne may require treatment every week to two weeks to get the acne under control, and then monthly treatments thereafter to maintain clear skin.
