What Are Chin and Cheek Implants?

Chin Implants

Chin implants (mentoplasty) are recommended for both men and women to address a small, recessed chin which can be viewed as a sign of weakness or frailty. Whether it is a congenital defect or the result of facial trauma, a diminutive chin can cause an imbalance with other facial features, detracting from an otherwise aesthetically pleasing appearance. A chin implant is a cosmetic surgical procedure designed to permanently improve the projection of a small, recessed chin through the expert insertion of a silicone implant. A chin implant improves the patient’s facial proportions by creating symmetry with the other features of the face. A more prominent chin not only increases aesthetic appeal, but will also elongate the neck, bringing out a definition of the face and taking pounds off of the appearance.

Cheek Implants

Cheek implants restore or create prominent cheekbones. Cheek implants are also available in a variety of sizes, shapes, and materials, allowing patients to customize their results.

Consultations with Dr. Chernoff

All surgical procedures begin with a thorough consultation appointment. At this time, Dr. Chernoff will assess your facial structure, discuss aesthetic improvement goals, review treatment options and their potential results, as well as discuss the potential risks involved. He will show before and after photos of his recent chin or cheek implant patients, and utilize computer imaging to determine the best size and shape implant for the individual situation. A customized surgical plan will be created, and tailored to the needs and goals of the specific patient.

How Is A Chin Impant Performed?

A chin implant is comprised of biocompatible silicone designed to enhance or augment the structure of the lower face. The implants used come in various shapes and sizes and the implant is customized to fit the exact specification of each patient. During your consultation, Dr. Chernoff will help you select the size of the implant to best achieve your aesthetic goals.

Dr. Chernoff performs the chin implant as an outpatient procedure at Outpatient Surgery Center using either twilight or general anesthesia. A local anesthetic is also used to fully numb the lower face. Dr. Chernoff begins the procedure by making a tiny incision on the inside, front portion of the mouth. The chin implant is placed, positioned, and finally secured. Dissolving stitches and flesh-colored tape will hold the implant in position for the first three to four days.

How Is Cheek Implant Surgery Performed?

The cheek implant procedure is relatively simple. After an incision is made inside your mouth where the implant will sit inside your cheek, a pocket is formed and the implant is properly secured. Generally, patients are placed under local anesthesia with sedation during this outpatient procedure.

Cheek implants are commonly performed with deep plane facelift or a mini-facelift or other total facial improvement procedures.

Are You A Candidate For A Chin Implant

A proportionate facial structure is key for an attractive appearance. The chin is a vital element for both balance and symmetry of the face. Individuals who have some of the following concerns may benefit from a chin implant:

  • A weak, receding chin
  • Facial asymmetry or deformities

A permanent chin implant can increase the size and projection of a chin, restoring balance with the forehead, nose, and cheeks. A chin implant can provide a subtle improvement to the facial silhouette while equalizing the more prominent features.

Are You A Candidate For Cheek Implants

Cheek implants are a permanent way to help create or restore prominent and alluring cheekbones. A variety of different cheek implants are available in different sizes, shapes, and materials to achieve your desired look.

If you were born with prominent or β€œhigh” cheekbones and have noticed that they have disappeared over the years, you are not alone. As we age, we lose fat and volume in our faces. Others may have inherited a flat mid-face which can flatten further as we age.

Preparing for Surgery

Prior to any surgical procedure, Dr. Chernoff recommends that all our patients read our "Patient Guide for Plastic Surgery". The guide explains important points that all patients should think about as they are considering a surgical procedure.

What Is The Recovery Process For A Chin Implant?

The recovery time from a chin augmentation is usually about a week; patients should take 5-7 days off work or school to allow for proper healing. Expect moderate discomfort, aching, and numbness for the first couple of days after surgery. Some swelling and bruising will occur but diminishes quickly. Patients should keep their heads elevated for the initial 24-48 hours after surgery; this will discourage any additional swelling. Dr. Chernoff makes sure his patients rest comfortably at home by prescribing appropriate medications. By 6 weeks post-surgery, all swelling should be diminished and the final chin implant results can be appreciated.

Very rarely, complications will occur after mentoplasty. Problems that can be associated with chin augmentation include infection, scarring, and a dislodging of the implant. Remember to always choose the best cosmetic surgeon available; this will greatly reduce the risk of any serious complications.
