Lip Lift

Upper Lip Lifts in Indianapolis, IN

Patients who have lost significant bulk to their upper lip or have a thin upper lip compared to their bottom lip can be good candidates for a surgical procedure called a lip lift.

The lip lift is a very gratifying procedure for these patients as it allows them to augment their lips surgically when filling materials would either be seen by the observer or felt by the patient having them done.

Are You A Candidate For A Lip Lift?

The best candidate for a lip lift is the patient who has a thin upper lip and a wide space between their upper lip and nose. When evaluating whether a patient is a candidate for a lip lift, computer imaging may be utilized to determine what a realistic augmentation is for the patient. Measurements to the millimeter are also taken off of the computerized image to yield surgical measurements for precision.

An aesthetically pleasing lip has a symmetrical contour to Cupid’s bow. A 1:1 height ratio between the vertical height of the upper lip and the vertical height of the lower lip is also sought.

How Is A Lip Lift Performed?

The procedure is performed with the patient under a twilight or general anesthetic. A surgical incision utilizing the laser diamond scalpel is made at the base of the nose. The pink lip tissue is elevated and skin is removed at the junction where the upper lip skin meets the base of the nose. The pink lip is then rolled further outward toward the white lip. At the lateral edges of the lip, a small portion of tissue is usually removed from the white lip in order to give a greater bulk effect to the pink lip.

This is then sewn with very fine stitches to give a barely perceptible scar. Stitches are removed in 5-7 days. Make-up can then be applied. It usually takes several weeks for the scar to become barely perceptible at normal conversational distance.

Preparing for Surgery

Prior to any surgical procedure, Dr. Chernoff recommends that all our patients read our "Patient Guide for Plastic Surgery". The guide explains important points that all patients should think about as they are considering a surgical procedure.

Are There Non-Surgical or Minimally Invasive Lip Augmentation Procedures?

At Chernoff Cosmetic Surgery in Indianapolis, we advise our patients to first try injectable lip dermal fillers to augment and shape their lips to see if they are happy with the results. There are specific dermal fillers that are used to rejuvenate and enhance a patient’s lips.

Products such as Restylane Silk are FDA-approved to enhance lips by plumping up thinning lips and smoothing wrinkles around the mouth. Also, Juvéderm XC and Juvéderm Volbella XC is used to enhance a patient’s lips. These products are smooth, soft dermal fillers that can be more precisely and evenly injected in your delicate lip tissue.
